ATHENA – Sen. Bill Hansell (R-Athena) is ready to once again propose changes to the so-called death tax as it relates to Oregon agriculture. Hansell said he has three bills ready when the session convenes on Jan. 17 dealing with an issue he has worked on for years.
“Production agriculture often is land rich but cash poor,” he said. “The estate is heavily taxed, especially in Oregon.”
Hansell said he is ready to work with other lawmakers to craft the best piece of legislation possible. He said the work remains to be done on determining which piece of legislation would have the best chance of being passed.
“It could be anything from an outright repeal of it, which a lot of states already have; modify what we have; or just bring Oregon’s up to par with the federal tax inheritance statutes,” he said.
