Half of fires so far in Central OR Dist. have been escaped debris burns

JOHN DAY – Oregon Department of Forestry John Day Unit Forest Resources Manager Brandon Ferguson was on KJDY’s Coffee Time speaking on the topic of fire season. While no public use restrictions are in effect as of June 12, 2023, Ferguson said to expect that to change as we get further into fire season.

He also said half of the fires so far this year have been human caused:

“So far, the district has experienced 22 fires. Of which, half were escaped debris burns. Debris burns are the number-one cause of human caused fires, and as we move into the season debris burns will be prohibited. ODF recommends covering your piles until the end of the fall.”
