HAINES – (Release from the Baker County Sheriff’s Office) On September 18, 2024, dispatch received a complaint of a dark-colored SUV speeding and driving recklessly down 10th Street toward Haines.
At approximately 12:29 p.m., information was relayed to deputies that two incomplete 911 calls were received from a residence in Haines. Deputies responded to the address and made contact with Andrew Harkness and a 17-year-old male. Harkness told deputies that the juvenile suffered a dog bite to the hand, and he would be transporting him to the emergency room. Deputies assessed the injury and noted small puncture wounds to the palm of the hand, which were not life-threatening. Deputies also observed that Harkness was operating a vehicle that matched the description of the reckless driving call.
During the interaction, Harkness entered his vehicle and drove away. The deputy observed Harkness fail to obey a stop sign. He attempted a traffic stop on Highway 30. As the deputy approached the driver’s side window and made contact, Harkness drove off. Deputies followed Harkness, who continued driving at a high rate of speed, passed a vehicle and failed to yield to their emergency lights.
Harkness arrived at St. Alphonsus and was contacted by deputies. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with Attempt to Elude, Fail to Obey a Traffic Control Device, and Violation of the Basic Rule.
