BAKER CITY — The Vale man who pleaded no contest to three counts in the 2020 deadly shooting of a Baker City woman will not withdraw that plea.
53-year-old Shawn Greenwood had previously entered a plea deal in 2021 in the shooting of Angela Parrish in Baker City in January, 2020. He pleaded no contest to charges of criminally negligent homicide, first-degree burglary, and attempting to elude law enforcement.
However, a decision by the Oregon Court of Appeals in April now allows Greenwood the option to withdraw his plea. The decision was prompted by allegations that lead investigator Baker City Police Detective Shannon Regan violated Greenwood’s constitutional rights by monitoring phone calls between Greenwood and his attorney in September 2020. Read more about that here.
At a status check hearing at the Baker County Courthouse on Thursday, June 20, his attorney Jim Schaeffer says Greenwood has served his sentence and would be eligible for release.
Schaeffer says that’s because the Oregon Court of Appeals dismissed several charges which lowered his sentence in the plea deal from 90 months to 24 months. Schaeffer claims Greenwood should be released as he’s already served 24 months.
Baker County District Attorney Greg Baxter said he needs to research the issue and determine whether he believes Greenwood actually should spend more time in prison.
Baker County Judge Matt Shirtcliff has scheduled another hearing in the case for July 3 at 8:15am.
