WALLA WALLA – To prepare for upcoming construction of a new asphalt pad at the compost facility, the green waste collection pile at the Sudbury Landfill will be temporarily relocated to the commonly referred to pit area.

Under state law, the green waste collection pile is considered solid waste and must be placed on a pad which prohibits fluid to pass through or in a lined area. This is to protect ground water until the green waste has been processed and proven to have passed pathogen reduction criteria.

The pit area is the only lined area available on site to temporarily accommodate the green waste pile until pad reconstruction is complete and normal operations of the compost facility can resume. There is no date currently set for construction of the asphalt pad, but the city anticipates it will happen sometime between May and November of this year. Since the composting process typically takes three to four months to complete, it is necessary to relocate the green waste pile now to accommodate the future work.

This project is expected to impact landfill operations and traffic flow throughout the summer and fall. Customers dropping off green waste should follow signs to the pit area and subsequent signs to the drop off area.
