Grass fire, power outage and semi-truck incident disrupt Tuesday afternoon in Pendleton

PENDLETON – It was a hectic late afternoon for Pendleton on Tuesday as a small grass fire, an incident with a semi-truck and a power outage caused headaches for commuters.

Drivers were diverted off Southeast Court Avenue near the intersection with Oregon Highway 11 around 4 p.m. as crews from Pendleton Fiber worked on overhead utility lines that appeared to have been struck by a semi-truck.

At around the same time, crews battled a grass fire just east of that location near Goad Road. Brian Hemphill, Pendleton Fire and Ambulance assistant chief, said the fire burned 28 acres and that the cause was unknown.

Pacific Power said the outage, which affected a large portion of the city including the downtown area, occurred because the company de-energized power lines due to the fire.
