BAKER AND UNION COUNTIES – (Information from the Oregon Dept. of Parks & Rec.) Two local organizations have been awarded state grants to help preserve two historic properties in Baker and Union counties. The Ascension School Camp and Conference Center was awarded $20,000 to replace the roof of the Ascension Chapel in Cove and Baker City Downtown was awarded $4,000 to paint the windows and doors of the Masonic Lodge in Baker City.
The funds are part of more than $277,500 awarded statewide by Oregon Heritage, a division of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to restore historic properties and fund archaeology projects.
These grants are approved by the State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation, a nine-member group that reviews nominations to the National Register of Historic Places. The members are professionally recognized in the fields of history, architecture, archaeology and other related disciplines.
