OLYMPIA – The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office has awarded grants totaling $1.2 million for four separate projects in Walla Walla County. The funding supports projects that deal with recreation and conservation.
The city of Walla Walla will use a $350,000 grant to renovate the Mill Creek Sportsplex. The lighting on the ball field will be converted to LEDs, shade structures will be added throughout the site, pedestrian routes will be improved, and the backstops will be reconstructed.
The Blue Mountain Land Trust will use a $345,500 grant to buy an agricultural easement on the 25-acre Welcome Table Farm on Old Milton Highway in Walla Walla. For the past decade, the farm has been growing fruits, vegetables, and flowers, in addition to hosting educational events for the community, highlighting the importance of locally produced food.
The city of College Place will use a $281,023 grant to renovate 3.4 acres of Veterans Park. Restrooms, a full-size basketball court, and two pickleball courts will be added.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, in cooperation with the Tri-State Steelheaders and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, will use a $242,900 grant to restore about a quarter mile of the Little Walla Walla River and surrounding uplands in the Swegle Unit of the W.T. Wooten Wildlife Area.
