PENDLETON – Project Turnkey has issued another round of grant awards to create safe homeless shelters, and this time one piece of the pie goes to establishing emergency housing in Pendleton. The Oregon Community Foundation is awarding $1.269 million to Community Action Partnership of Eastern Central Oregon – better known as CAPECO.
The funds are being used to purchase the Rodeway Inn at 205 S.E. Dorion Ave. The 35-room facility will be used as a non-congregate shelter for what CAPECO terms to be a “wide range of individuals and families experiencing homelessness.”
It should begin operating this month. Umatilla County Board of Commissioners Chairman George Murdock said he’s impressed with the project, which was established by the Oregon Legislature.
“Project Turkey is brilliant in its design of providing a roof over the heads of those without one for a fraction of the cost of building new,” he said.
CAPECO is not just exclusive to Umatilla County. It also serves Morrow, Gilliam, Wheeler, Sherman, Wasco, and Hood River counties.
