Grant County ESD collaborates with BMCC to get accurate drone mapping of schools

JOHN DAY – Grant County Education Service District School Safety Prevention Specialist Gordon Larson was in KJDY studios recently, and explained that in conjunction with the Blue Mountain Community College Precision Agriculture Program, the ESD was able to get accurate mapping of each Grant County school district campus with the use of drones:

“We got some great mapping of our schools. We had some logistic [challenges] as far as travel, so we gave them time to travel here and do those flights. They did an exceptional job. Thus far, I have found the collaborative efforts by BMCC and ESD to be exceptional. We ended up with a really fine, quality product.”

Blue Mountain Community College Precision Agriculture Instructor Drew Leggett was also on the show, and explained that the use of drones in agriculture got popularized around ten years ago, and precision agriculture is on the leading edge as the technology develops:

“It’s so advanced now, that, really, the drones just fly themselves. So, we’re able to use these as tools to collect data. Rather than go out and walk around over 5,000 acres, you put a drone up in the sky [and] you can cover that acreage in a fraction of the time. Find out where the problems are, and then just target your on-the-ground work to where those problems are.”
