Grant County develops policy to battle school absenteeism

JOHN DAY – Grant County Justice of the Peace Kathy Stinnett and Every Day Matters Coordinator Bonni Booth were on KJDY’s Coffee Time Monday to discuss local efforts underway to battle chronic absenteeism.

Justice Stinnett highlighted a policy, primarily authored by Circuit Court Judge Robert Raschio, in place to address students who are chronically absent from school. The policy involves a partnership between both courts in Grant County (Justice Court and Circuit Court), as well as the Grant County Education Service District, the GCSO School Resource Office, and school superintendents:

“There are laws in the State of Oregon that require parents or guardians to get their kids to school. That can either mean physically attending school, or taking certified online school classes. The courts are a part of the process when trying to get parents and guardians to make sure they’re getting their kids to school.”
