Grad requirement report is just that – a report

PENDLETON – A recent report on Oregon’s high school graduation requirements was greeted with misunderstanding by many members of the public according to InterMountain Education Service District Superintendent Mark Mulvihill. He said that people reacted as if the document was a done deal, instead of an in-depth report.
“Ultimately, the state board of education will adopt the diploma requirements in another year,” he said.
The report was the product of testimony from thousands of students, parents, and stakeholders about Oregon’s graduation requirements, which Mulvihill says he believes are deeply outdated.
“The diploma requirement needs to be revised in Oregon,” he said. “In my opinion, it’s dated. It came from another era where testing was so critical.”
Oregon has some of the most stringent high school graduation requirements in the nation. Mulvihill said the report that came out makes sense without dumbing down what is asked of students.
“I think there are some pretty exciting things, like a financial literacy class; an emphasis on workforce and job training, more electives, less emphasis on testing, assessments will be built into the classrooms rather than an outside assessment,” he said.
