Gov. Ferguson leads coalition against Trump tariffs

OLYMPIA โ€“ Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson on Monday filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court, supporting a legal challenge against President Donald Trumpโ€™s tariffs.

The brief was filed on behalf of a coalition of 27 public and private partners, including 14 individuals, all of whom are members of the Democratic Party. Among those listed are State Treasurer Mike Pellicciotti, Senate Majority Leader Jamie Pedersen, and Spokane Mayor Lisa Jo Brown.

A release from the governor’s office stated that the partners in the coalition have “borne the consequences of President Trumpโ€™s unlawful tariffs and disregard for separation of powers.” The filing also includes several union groups and the Washington Economic Development Association.

According to the release, the state is projected to lose 32,000 jobs and suffer a net loss of $8.1 billion in output sales by 2029 if the tariffs remain in effect. The tariffs are also claimed to cost the state $2.2 billion in general fund revenue over the next four years.

โ€œOur coalition knows firsthand how devastating President Trumpโ€™s illegal tariffs are to Washingtonโ€™s businesses, workers and consumers,โ€ Gov. Ferguson said in the release. โ€œThe Supreme Court must follow the Constitution and strike down these reckless tariffs before they cost our state billions of dollars and tens of thousands of jobs.โ€
