Free Mattress Recycling arrives in Wallowa County with new permanent dropoff site

ENTERPRISE- Wallowa County residents can now recycle old mattresses and box springs for free, thanks to a new permanent collection site at the Fish Hatchery Lane Recycle Center in Enterprise.
The site marks the first year-round mattress dropoff location in Wallowa County and the fourth in Eastern Oregon. The center accepts units Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The dropoff location is part of Oregon’s statewide mattress stewardship network, managed by the industry-led Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) under its “Bye Bye Mattress” program. Established by the Oregon Mattress Stewardship Act of 2022, the program officially launched collection operations across the state on Jan. 1, 2025.
The initiative aims to curb illegal dumping along local roadsides and waterways, divert bulky waste from landfills, and conserve resources by repurposing raw materials. When mattresses are recycled through the program, workers dismantle them into steel, foam, fiber, and wood. These materials are then transformed into industrial products, including carpet padding, insulation, new steel goods, and biomass fuel.
“We’re thankful to Wallowa County for providing residents with a permanent, year-round site where they can drop off mattresses for recycling,” said Mike O’Donnell, Chief Operating Officer for MRC. “Their commitment to serving their community and reducing waste is making it easier to recycle old mattresses and box springs in Eastern Oregon.”
The program is funded through a $22.50 stewardship fee applied to all new mattress and box spring purchases in Oregon. The fee covers local collection infrastructure, transportation, and processing fees so that dropping off discarded bedding remains free for residents.
The Enterprise location joins existing Eastern Oregon collection hubs at the Baker City Landfill, Ontario Sanitary Service, and C&B Sanitary Service in Burns. MRC also reminds consumers that they can ask retailers to haul away old mattresses when purchasing a replacement.
