KENNEWICK – Aaron Christopher Kelly, the man who shot two strangers inside the Fred Meyer in Richland, Washington, two years ago will not stand trial. Benton County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Eisinger announced Monday that the court entered a final judgment.

Kelly was found not guilty by reason of insanity. He has been committed to the custody of Eastern State Hospital for the Feb. 7, 2022, murder of Instacart worker Justin Krumbah and the attempted murder of Fred Meyer employee Mark Hill. Krumbah died at the scene, and Hill survived his wounds.

Eisinger said his office will be advocating for Kelly’s confinement at Eastern State Hospital for the remainder of his life.

During Monday’s news conference announcing the court’s final judgment, Eisinger closed with this statement, “I want to acknowledge the profound loss experienced by Justin Krumbah’s family, Mark Hill’s injuries, and the lasting impact on our community. They deserve justice, and though this outcome may not fully deliver it, our hearts are with them.”
