KIMBERLY – John Day Fossil Beds National Monument Public Information Officer Rita Garcia was on KJDY’s Coffee Time recently, explaining some exciting new discoveries at the park. One of those discoveries is an ancient trackway left by a prehistoric bird:
“We didn’t find the fossils of a bird, but we found the trace fossils of a bird—which is a trackway. It was a plover-like bird, probably walking along the edge of a river, or stream, or a place where there was wet ground, and as that bird walked along it left its footprints behind.
Now, that’s kind of really cool, because birds are not something you see fossilized everyday because they have bones that are hollow.”
