Forest Service plan 2,500-acres prescribed fire along Forest Service Road 2820

HARNEY COUNTY-The Emigrant Creek Ranger District is preparing to initiate a 2,500-acre prescribed burn beginning Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, targeting overgrown vegetation in the Marshall Divine area to lower the risk of severe wildfires.

Located approximately one mile east of Idlewild Campground off Forest Service Road 2820, the Marshall Divine unit is a key target for wildland fuel reduction. By intentionally burning underbrush and accumulated forest debris under controlled conditions, fire managers aim to protect surrounding communities, local infrastructure, and natural resources from future high-intensity wildfires.

Fire officials will closely monitor local weather patterns, relative humidity, and wind conditions in the days and hours leading up to ignition. Operations will proceed only if all safety and environmental parameters are met; if conditions prove unfavorable, scheduled burn activities will be postponed or canceled.

Residents and visitors nearby may see smoke originating from the Forest Service Road 2820 corridor. Drivers are advised to use caution along nearby routes, as smoke could briefly impair visibility.

For real-time updates and active burn locations across the region, community members can check the PNW Prescribed Fire Tracker.
