First responders urge fireworks safety, caution ahead of July 4

As the Fourth of July approaches, city officials across the Columbia Basin are reminding residents to check municipal codes before legally discharging consumer fireworks as all jurisdictions maintain different fireworks ordinances.
Because rules vary, residents living in border areas may find that their neighbors are subject to different regulations.
With holiday celebrations expected to increase local emergency calls, regional dispatchers are urging the public to keep 911 lines clear for immediate dangers.
“Please keep children away from fireworks,” said Walla Walla Firefighter Cesar Lopez. “Light one device at a time and move back quickly. Keep a bucket of water and a hose close by. Never attempt to relight a firework that’s already been ignited.”
Emergency dispatchers covering the Columbia Basin expect a major uptick in calls over the holiday weekend. Authorities emphasize that 911 should only be used to report active fires, reckless fireworks handling, or related injuries.
