WALLOWA COUNTY – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has confirmed two new wolf depredations in Wallowa County. The first depredation was initially investigated on August 25 and occurred in the Bear Creek area of Wallowa County on private land. The attack resulted in the injury of a single 5-month-old calf and has been attributed to the Bear Creek Pack.
The second depredation was initially investigated on August 27 and occurred in the Deer Creek area of Wallowa County on private land. The attack resulted in the death of a single 7-month-old calf and has also been attributed to the Bear Creek Pack.
These two attacks represent the first confirmed wolf depredations in Northeast Oregon since a surge of wolf activity in Union and Wallowa counties in early July. A wolf removal permit for livestock producers near Lostine was also recently extended past its initial July 31 expiration date due to ongoing depredations.
