Fireworks spark fires in Walla Walla, but property damage drops

WALLA WALLA — Fireworks-related incidents kept local firefighters busy over the holiday weekend, causing an estimated $15,000 in property damage, the Walla Walla Fire Department reports.

WWFD responded to 17 known or suspected fireworks fires within city limits between July 1-5. The calls prompted approximately $2,200 in department overtime expenses, with three personnel called in to assist with high call volumes and holiday events.

Fire crews extinguished a wide variety of blazes, including a field fire that spread into standing grain, a minor junkyard structure fire, burning garbage cans, and a bush ignited by a firework thrown from a moving vehicle.

According to department records, this year’s 17 holiday incidents are up from 10 last year, though damage totals dropped from $33,300 in 2025.
