Starting January 17, 2023, the Malheur National Forest will begin the 2023 firewood permit sales.

The program is the same as the 2022 season. Free/Personal Use and Commercial Use permits will be available. Free/Personal Use firewood permits are for personal use firewood only. Those who receive Free/Personal Use firewood permits may use firewood for cutting, manufacturing, handling, or other processing, but not for resale. Minimum for personal use is 4 cords with a maximum of 8 per household.

The regional minimum rate for Commercial Use firewood permits remains unchanged at $5 per cord, with a 4-cord minimum, with a maximum of 8 cord per household per year. Commercial Use firewood can be sold unlike Free/Personal Use. Customers may get both Free/Personal and Commercial Use permits with a total 16 cord per household.

A valid permit, firewood tags, pink tags for Free/Personal Use and green tags for Commercial Use, map and regulations will still be required to have on hand when cutting and transporting firewood. These permits and tags will be available at all Malheur National Forest offices starting January 17, 2023.

Under the Commercial Use firewood program, there will be an 8 cord per household limit. A valid permit, map, regulations, and special forest product tags will be required to have on hand when cutting and transporting the firewood. As stated above, the permits will be $5 a cord, with a 4-cord minimum, and will be available at all Malheur National Forest offices starting January 17, 2023.

All other special forest products such as post and pole, pinecone, bough, mushroom and other permits will stay the same, requiring a fee and the user to have a valid permit.
