MONUMENT – As we finally head out of winter and into the warm and dry season, wildfire prevention and mitigation are becoming priorities among many agencies–including fuels treatment. Grant County Firewise Coordinator Irene Jerome said there are several cross-boundary projects in place involving different agencies and entities. One project is being planned near Monument:

“More at the local level, Top Road Community up there out of Monument became a Firewise community last year sometime. One of our major efforts is going to be looking at a cross-boundary project between the private landowners up there and the BLM—Bureau of Land Management out of Prineville on that old JV Ranch, and then the Umatilla National Forest, Heppner District.

It’s a big area that needs fuels treatment and the landowners are excited about it.”

We’ll keep you up to date on the project as more information comes in.
