UKIAH – A fire discovered near Ukiah on Wednesday burned more than 600 acres, but further spread was halted by a quick response from Oregon Department of Forestry crews.

Justin Lauer, with the ODF, said mapping put the fire’s size at 610 acres as of Thursday morning. He said it spread quickly through fine fuels after starting on private land at around 2:30 p.m.

Lauer added that good progress was made early on thanks to the rapid response of multiple resources, including six Type 6 engines, one dozer, one skidgen, two hand crews, two helicopters, four single-engine air tankers, two large air tankers, one very large air tanker and two overhead positions.

Lauer said resources were still on scene Thursday to secure the remaining perimeter and mop up, which is expected to take a few days.

“This fire along with the Old Emigrant fire from yesterday outside of Pendleton have both exhibited fire behavior not typical for this time of year in the region and are good reminders that fuel conditions are ahead of seasonal norms and receptive to any source of ignition,” Lauer said.

“It is only the beginning of our fire season in northeast Oregon. We ask that people be careful when enjoying the outdoors to prevent wildfires.”
