Firefighters are staying busy

GRANT COUNTY – UPDATE (12 p.m., 8/22):

The battles continue this afternoon against wildfires popping up throughout Grant County—mostly on the northern half, following much lightning activity. Wildcad.net reports that Malheur National Forest resources are responding to the Crocket’s Knob wildfire, reported early this morning between Vinegar Hill and Galena. It was last updated at 3 acres in size.

In addition, resources are on scene of three other wildfire starts with limited details listed. The North Dixie Fire, about 10 miles north of Prairie City was limited to a single tree at last update. We’ll provide further information as it comes in.

Firefighting resources are busy all over the map with suppression efforts as lightning continues over Eastern Oregon. According to wildcad.net, John Day Interagency Dispatch Center reports that local resources have contained and controlled 9 separate wildfire starts since Friday, with the largest growing to a quarter of an acre. The website also indicates that resources are responding to two other incidents reported early this morning, with no details released. We’ll keep you updated.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected to continue through this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 8:00 p.m. tonight. Individual cells may have wetting rains, but most are expected to have just a few hundredths of an inch. Additionally, lightning may strike in dry areas away from the rainfall within these storms.
