Fire watch required on ODF protected lands

GRANT COUNTY – Brandon Ferguson with the ODF John Day Unit was on KJDY’s Coffee Time last week informing listeners that we are in fire season, and even though Public Use Restrictions aren’t yet in place for the John Day District, there are still rules to follow on ODF-protected lands.

Ferguson said currently debris burning is only allowed by permit from the ODF office; there are no fireworks allowed within an 8th of a mile of protected lands; no exploding targets, tracer ammunition or any bullet with pyrotechnic charges; and no smoking while working in any operational areas.

Ferguson also said that a fire watch needs to follow operations:

“The other big one, is fire watch is now required for a minimum of one hour during breaks and at the end of operational periods, just to ensure we aren’t having and operational fires occurring.”
