BOARDMAN – A fire in a dumpster at Riverside High School led to the evacuation of students and athletes from the activity building, but no injuries were reported.
Boardman Fire Rescue District (BFRD) says they responded at 5:24 p.m. Thursday and Riverside staff had already evacuated the activity building. The fire was in a construction dumpster that contained pieces of the old gym floor as well as chemicals used to install the new gym floor. BFRD said the contents of the dumpster made the fire dangerous and difficult to control.
BFRD says most of the damage was contained to the dumpster, but the concession and activity buildings were threatened. BFRD Chief Michael Hughes says the buildings do appear to have smoke and cosmetic damage.
