WALLA WALLA – An abandoned house, located just south of the Walla Walla VA Medical Center campus, was destroyed in a fire Friday afternoon. Walla Walla Parks and Recreation Director Andy Coleman said the structure, constructed around 1890, was a former Fort Walla Walla military house.
The Walla Walla Fire Department was dispatched at 4:27 p.m. to the area east of the Fort Walla Walla Amphitheater, along the Planet Walk Recreation Trail.
When the initial crews arrived, firefighters found a rapidly moving wildland fire that spread into some trees and the abandoned structure.
WWFD said this fire was the fourth and largest fire of the day, located in the same geographical area. The cause of the fire is suspicious in nature, and the Walla Walla Police Department is investigating.
No injuries were reported. Walla Walla County Fire Districts No. 4 and 8, plus the College Place Fire Department also responded.
