MILTON-FREEWATER – A massive fire, which drew a large mutual-aid response, destroyed a Milton-Freewater business Friday night. Milton-Freewater Rural Fire and EMS reports firefighters were dispatched at 11:01 p.m. to a commercial woodworking shop on the 85000 block of Highway 339. Multiple callers reported the shop had smoke and flames showing from all sides.
When firefighters arrived, they found the single-story shop fully engulfed. Out of an abundance of caution, neighbors were evacuated. The defensive fire attack lasted several hours due to the heavy fire load caused by the woodworking materials housed inside the shop.
The fire scene is still active with significant heat and smoke. The area is being monitored and the public is asked to avoid the area.
Assisting Milton-Freewater Fire and EMS was Milton-Freewater Fire Department, East Umatilla Fire and Rescue, Walla Walla County Fire District No. 4, College Place Fire Department, Milton-Freewater Police Department, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Oregon Department of Transportation, and Pacific Power.
The building is a total loss, and the fire was contained to the building of origin. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
