KENNEWICK – Firefighters responded to a residential structure fire at 1:19 a.m. Sunday on the 3300 block of West Seventh Avenue. Two adults inside the home got out safely before firefighters arrived.

The adults inside the home told firefighters they were alerted to the fire by what they described as a popping sound. When they went to investigate the source of the sound, they discovered a fire in one of the bedrooms located on the first floor of the home. One of the occupants attempted to extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher, but the extinguisher did not discharge. Both occupants self-evacuated before the fire department arrived.

Kennewick Fire Chief Chad Michael said the effort to put out the fire was made extremely challenging due to the unique interior design that did now allow access into the second floor of the home from inside the home. Firefighting efforts were also hampered by a heavy content of materials throughout the home.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is presently undetermined.

The occupants of the home thought they had working smoke alarms, but none were heard during the course of the fire.
