Fire closes I-90 in both directions

MEDICAL LAKE, Washington – Interstate 90 is closed in both directions between the Four Lakes Interchange and Salnave Road as the Gray Fire has jumped the interstate. Detours are available on State Route 904 through Cheney. State Route 902 is closed.

The Gray Fire also forced the closure of I-90 westbound at the US 2 interchange in Spokane. Eastbound lanes are closed at the Tyler interchange.

Second (get set) and third level (go now) evacuation orders have been issued for Medical Lake, Lakeland Village, Highway 202 and Four Lakes and the patients and staff at Eastern State Hospital have been evacuated. At last report the fire was over 3,000 acres and some buildings were destroyed. It is burning in dry grass, timber and wheat.

State fire assistance was mobilized to support local firefighters working to contain the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
