Fire causes damage to Nelson Irrigation in Walla Walla

WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla Fire Department was dispatched to Nelson Irrigation, 848 Airport Road at 8:51 p.m. Sunday to reports of a commercial structure fire. Employees on site reported a piece of machinery was on fire. After multiple attempts to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, the fire continued to grow.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and the fire isolated to a single piece of equipment. Once firefighters confirmed the building was not occupied, they went to work on extinguishing the fire and had it under control at 9:06 p.m.

The fire is believed to have been caused by an overheated hydraulic pump. Damage is estimated at more than $100,000.

No injuries were reported. Walla Walla County Fire District No. 4 and College Place Fire Department also responded as part of a mutual-aid agreement.
