HERMISTON – Another student-built home is ready to hit the market in Hermiston. A community open house for Fieldstone No. 9 is tomorrow (Tuesday) from 1-6 p.m. at 884 Angus Court next to Armand Larive Middle School. The Columbia Basin Student Home Building Program is taught through Hermiston High School, but students wanting to learn building skills from Umatilla or Stanfield may also apply.
The homes are fully fenced with lots of at least 9,000 square feet in size. They feature high-quality materials and when they are complete the lots are fully landscaped. There are 11 lots available for development on the current cul-de-sac, but Superintendent Tricia Mooney said that won’t mean the program will end.
“We are beginning the work for the next cul-de-sac this summer as we plan for the next phase of student-built homes,” she said.
Mooney credited area contractors with stepping up to help educate the young people as they determine whether the building trades offer careers that interest them. But she said that whether they become master builders or not, they are learning valuable lessons.
“For our kids who decide this might not be the pathway they want to travel, it teaches a lot of life skills and life lessons – things you can fix around your own home someday when you’re a homeowner,” she said.
