WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla Public Schools Board of Directors meets virtually tonight (Tuesday) at 5:30 p.m. for its regular business meeting. Board members will consider a resolution to transfer a portion of right-of-way to the city of Walla Walla for improvements being made to the Fern Avenue and Abbott Road intersection.
In August, the city made the intersection a four-way stop. These interim improvements were made for the safety of pedestrians and drivers at that congested intersection. Next year, the city of Walla Walla, Walla Walla County, and Walla Walla Public Schools plan to seek grant funding for additional improvements, which include curb extensions, better street lighting, ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps, and bike lanes, with construction targeted for 2024.
Superintendent Wade Smith will also present a bond program update on construction at Walla Walla High School, Lincoln High School, and Pioneer Middle School.
Among some of the work being done at Wa-Hi, crews continue to work on the parking lot near the gym, putting finishing touches on prepping it for asphalt. The target date for paving is Monday, Nov. 1. At Lincoln High School, selective demolition began last month, as well as tree removal near the entrance at Fourth Street. A walking-path for students was also installed from Third Street for safe access to portables. At Pioneer Middle School, the north classroom remodel wrapped up last month.
Tonight’s meeting will be available on Zoom. The ID number is 975 7453 4232. Public comments will be accepted in written format only and must be emailed to Administrative Assistant Susie Golden at sgolden@wwps.org or delivered to the Walla Walla Public Schools District Office located at 364 South Park Street by 4 p.m. today.
