WALLA WALLA – Whitman College is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Education for possible discrimination. The investigation began Friday, Dec. 8.
“Whitman College is cooperating fully with the Office of Civil Rights by providing the information requested and learning about the reported incidents,” Whitman College Vice President of Communications Gina Zandy Ohnstad said. “We do not yet know the specifics of the allegations.”
Last month, Whitman College President Sarah Bolton issued a letter to the campus community following some reports of harassment. She opened the letter stating the campus includes people from more than 70 nations and “a community with a wide range of opinions, identities, and experiences.”
“Antisemitism has no place here,” Bolton added. “The same is true for Islamophobia and other forms of bias and discrimination.”
The U.S. Department of Education lists several other investigations of West Coast schools, including the University of Washington, UCLA, and Stanford University.
