BAKER CITY – (Release from Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol – Elko) On Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at approximately 7:15 PM Pacific Time, Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to a two-vehicle crash on Lamoille Highway (SR227) near mile marker 6 in Elko County. This location is approximately 3 miles south of Elko.
Preliminary investigation determined that a white 2014 Volkswagen Golf hatchback was traveling northbound on Lamoille Highway in the number one travel lane. A 2020 RAM 5500 service truck was traveling southbound in the number one travel lane. For unknown reasons the Golf failed to negotiate a right-hand curve, crossed the double yellow centerline, and entered the southbound lane occupied by the RAM. The front left of the Golf struck the front left of the RAM. The Golf was re-directed back across the northbound travel lanes and came to a stop on the shoulder. The RAM came to a stop in the southbound travel lanes. All lanes were blocked by the vehicles and debris.
Unfortunately, the driver of the white Golf, 27-year-old Haley Storey (a new local resident from Baker City, OR) was pronounced deceased. A juvenile passenger in the right rear seat of the Golf sustained minor injuries and was transported to the local hospital. The driver of the RAM was wearing a seatbelt and treated on scene by medical personnel. At approximately 9:30 PM single lane traffic control in both directions was setup by crews from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT). The highway was completely opened at midnight.
The crash is being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command East Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T.). If you were a witness to this incident, or have any information regarding the crash, please contact Trooper Mitchell Payne of the NHP Elko Office at (775) 753-1111. Reference case # 2205-00184.
