KENNEWICK – A family of four is temporarily displaced after their two-story home located on the 5200 block of South Auburn Place caught fire just before 8 p.m. Wednesday.

After the residence was safely evacuated by Kennewick police officers, firefighters from the Kennewick Fire Department, Benton County Fire District No. 1 and the Pasco Fire Department extinguished the fire within approximately 20 minutes of the first crew’s arrival on scene. The fire was contained to the bedroom of origin in which the fire started.

KFD Chief Chad Michael said the fire did not spread into any other parts of the home.

“This is attributed in part to a young man that closed the bedroom door before leaving the home, which helped keep the fire contained to the room the fire started in,” Michael said.

Firefighters placed tarps to help minimize water damage on the first floor and picked up all the Christmas gifts under the tree to prevent them from being damaged.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury, but did not require any medical treatment or transport.

Michael said the cause of the fire was determined to be a young man that was using a lighter to melt spray foam residential insulation. It was not clear as to what he was working on when the fire occurred.
