WALLA WALLA – The intersection of Clinton and Melrose Street will be closed for an extended period beginning tomorrow (Monday, March 17), lasting approximately eight weeks. City crews will replace and reconfigure the water distribution system beneath the former railroad crossing at this intersection. Once crews complete the water utility work at the Melrose intersection, the contractor will move forward with pavement reconstruction, curb and gutter installation, and curb ramp improvements in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Detour routes will be in place using Sumach Street, Rose Street, Isaacs Avenue, and Division Street.
This work is part of the Clinton Street Utilities Replacement and Pavement Preservation Project. The city’s water distribution network is fed by tanks located north of Sumach Street, which supply the system via a 24-inch main that runs down to the Clinton and Melrose Street intersection. Due to the former railroad crossing bisecting this intersection, the existing system consists of a complex configuration of five different mains in four sizes (8-inch, 12-inch, 16-inch, and 24-inch), along with broken valves that require replacement.
