Excessive Heat Warning in John Day Basin through Wednesday

JOHN DAY \ DAYVILLE \ MONUMENT – An Excessive Heat Warning remains in Effect for the John Day Basin until 10 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Expect dangerously hot conditions with limited overnight relief. The agency is calling for afternoon high temperatures of 95 to 110 degrees, with overnight lows only cooling to the mid-50s to lower 70s.

The risk for heat-related illnesses increases significantly during extreme heat events like this. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in cool area, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Governor Tina Kotek has declared a statewide extreme heat emergency. Also, a Heat Advisory is in place for Long Creek and the Southern Blue Mountains.

* IMPACTS…Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during

  extreme heat events.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Hottest temperatures during this

  long-duration heatwave are expected Tuesday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of

the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car

interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose

fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning

or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and

heat stroke.
