Evacuation levels reduced around Salmon and Olive Butte Fires

Forest closure remains in place and Evacuation Zones has been downgraded. Residents, home owners, and land owners accessing property need to provide identification at security checkpoints. The following Zones are now in a Level 2 – Set status:

Salmon Fire and Olive Butte Fire Daily Update August 3, 2026

Total Resources: 30 engines; 9 crews; 22 heavy equipment; 23 water tenders; 445 personnel
Baker County, Grant County, Emergency Management, and ABQ Zone Type 3 Incident Management Team will meet today to discuss downgrading the evacuations.
Containment percentages around both fires continue to increase. Fire crews conduct foot patrols along containment lines, securing edges and checking for any lingering heat sources. As containment increases, crews have begun moving equipment to staging areas, in preparation for backhaul. Fire personnel will continue to look at areas within containment lines, where there are no threats from heat sources, and identify next steps as divisions move into suppression and repair efforts.
“As we transition away from fire suppression and into suppression repair in some areas, we face different hazards. I ask fire personnel and the public to be patient with each other. We still have a lot of work out here to make the area safe for everyone”, Incident Commander Lino Baca.
Salmon Fire- Size: 1,426 acres | Start Date: July 8, 2026| Cause: Lightning | Containment: 76%
Fire crews are working to begin the process of removing any extra equipment from the areas closest to the community of Greenhorn. Sprinklers and hose lays will remain in the area, but at a reduced capacity. Resources will continue to focus on green islands of unburned fuels within the fire perimeter.
Olive Butte Fire- Size: 3,090 acres | Start Date: July 8, 2026 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 66%
Additional gridding along parts of the fire perimeter today resulted in a few heat sources being identified.
Weather: Despite a notable drop in temperatures (low 70s) due to the cold front moving through the area, relative humidity did not increase. Expect another cool day today, with a slight breeze. Relative humidity will drop back into the teens during the day, continuing the warm and very dry pattern.

Evacuations: Stay up to date on evacuation orders by visiting the Baker County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. Conditions can change quickly. Heavy equipment and fire vehicles are still working in these areas, so please drive with caution and be alert for unexpected fire traffic on narrow roads.
