Evacuation levels lifted for Grant County’s Long Point Fire

KIMBERLY, OR – Firefighters battled the Long Point Fire near Kimberly yesterday. Grant County Sheriff Todd McKinley gave our newsroom a quick update yesterday, saying that crews have kept it within the fire’s footprint. At last update the fire was 355 acres, according to WildCAD.

As of 7:30 Friday morning, The Level 1 evacuation zone has been lifted for areas surrounding the fire.

The Long Point evacuation zone has been rescinded.

As of this morning the ODF Incident Management Team (IMT) reports that crews are continuing to line the fire, which did not grow in the last 24hrs. Although not fully contained, most of the fire is a “mop-up” operation.

The BLM has issued closures of the affected areas around the fire as well as the Lone Pine and Big Bend campgrounds.

ODF IMT officials encourage people in the area to continue to be aware of the fire activity and the potential for hot spots to start up. Please report any smoke or other indications of fire.

The Bureau of Land Management announces an immediate temporary closure of  public lands in Grant County due to an active fire in the area. This measure is necessary to reduce  conflicts with emergency crews and facilitate fire suppression efforts, ensuring public safety and the  integrity of land and resources. 

Closure Details: The closure affects the following areas: 

• BLM-managed public lands east of the Grant County/Wheeler County line • North of Highway 402 

• South of the Umatilla National Forest 

• West of Cupper Creek Road 

• Includes Lone Pine and Big Bend Campgrounds 

This closure is effective immediately and will remain in place until conditions permit safe public  access. 

Exceptions to the Closure: Certain individuals may be exempt, including: 

• Federal, State, or local officers or members of emergency response teams. • BLM or Oregon Department of Forestry employees engaged in official duties. • Individuals with rights for access or those with written approval from the BLM Authorized  Officer. 

Legal Penalties: Violations of this emergency order may lead to prosecution, with fines and possible  imprisonment. The Long Point Fire was reported July 9 at approximately 12:10 PM near the community of Kimberly, about 8 miles east of Spray, Oregon. The fire is estimated at 355 acres. High winds contributed to rapid fire growth to the east yesterday afternoon. Fire behavior moderated overnight, and forward progression of the fire has been halted. Today, firefighters are working to build and strengthen containment lines around the current fire perimeter. Due to rugged terrain, there is limited access for heavy equipment. There are 162 personnel working on the incident including fire engines, hand crews, water tenders, heavy equipment, and helicopters.
