JOHN DAY – Grant County ESD Superintendent Robert Waltenburg was recently in the newsroom to discuss the recognition of the impressive educators within Grant County. The first opportunity he mentioned was the statewide Oregon Teacher of the Year:
“The Oregon Regional Teacher of the year—we have two nominees in Grant County. Now, the ball really is in the teachers’ court. The process is anybody nominates anybody. Those go in, and the Oregon Department of Ed. and the Oregon Lottery contact those two individuals and say… ‘Here is the packet for you to apply…’
So, we’re waiting on those to be returned—that’ll be April 15th.”
The Grant County ESD also holds their own district-led Crystal Apple Awards:
“That’s a two-prong approach, because we feel every staff member at a school educates kids. Everybody from bus drivers, to teachers, to administrators—everybody that’s in there, working with those kids. There are two awards, remember, one is [on] the classified [staff] side, the other is on the licensed teacher side. We’ll get our committee together and select from those, and that person becomes next year’s Crystal Apple…king or queen, I guess we’ll call them.”
Waltenburg said to keep our eyes on the news, more on the Crystal Apple Awards will be coming out in the middle of April.
