WESTON, Oregon – A fire at the onion building at Smith Frozen Foods Tuesday afternoon forced everyone inside to evacuate.
The fire, which started inside the building at about 2:27 p.m. was knocked down by dry chem extinguishers. Crews from the East Umatilla County Rural Fire Protection District arrived moments later and extinguished the rest of the fire.
Electricity and gas were immediately shut off and no neighboring structures were threatened.
Smith Frozen Foods will provide fire watch over the next 24 hours. An investigation concluded that heat from the equipment caught onions on fire
No injuries were reported.
