LA GRANDE – (Release from EOU) The Grand Staircase project at Eastern Oregon University continues to make progress over the winter, with plans in place for completion by the fall of 2024.
Work on removing the Grand Staircase structure is anticipated to resume early next year with a new archaeological team on-site Jan 3-19, 2024. EOU is working through the contracting process to secure Eastern Washington University Archaeological and Historical Services (EWU AHS) to provide these services. EWU AHS will monitor excavation and ensure that artifacts that may be uncovered are managed in accordance with the requirements of a secured archaeological permit.
“It is important to ensure we actively steward the history and the land on which EOU is located,” said Tim Seydel, Vice President for University Advancement. “This is a big project with numerous moving parts, and we appreciate the patience and support of the community as we work on this project to create a new connection between the university and the community.”
EOU is located on historically significant land and the university partnered with Peter Meijer Architect who successfully secured the historic preservation architectural permit and the City of La Grande Landmarks review.
