Energy Facility Siting Council plans rulemaking on radioactive material transport

SALEM – The Oregon Energy Facility Siting Council has notified the Oregon Secretary of State that it has entered a period of proposed rulemaking regarding a Radioactive Material Transport Fee.

The rulemaking would update the fees paid by carriers of certain radioactive materials through the state. These fees are used to support Oregon’s radioactive material transport safety program. That includes training emergency responders along major radioactive material transport routes.

The proposed rules also add fee requirements for applicable rail shipments. That would enable emergency responder training to address radioactive material being shipped on trains as well as by highways.

The public can comment or ask questions regarding the proposed rules by emailing tom.jackman@oregon.energy.gov. The deadline for public input is July 31. There will also be a public hearing on July 24 at 9:30 a.m. at the Oregon Department of Energy in Salem. Information on the rulemaking as well as how to livestream the meeting is available on the rulemaking page.
