MEACHAM – The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a free First Day Snowshoe Hike at Emigrant Springs State Park on New Year’s Day. It’s one of several First Day Hikes offered across Oregon.
The hike at Emigrant Springs is a 1.5 mile trek around Emigrant Springs State Park in the Blue Mountains east of Pendleton. The terrain is level for the most part. There could be moderate to heavy snow, loose rock, and exposed roots. Hikers must be able to properly wear snowshoes and could possibly be exposed to inclement weather.
Registration is required. There are a limited number of snowshoes, but hikers are welcome to bring their own. The hike starts at 10 a.m. at 65068 Old Oregon Trail Road. Parking is provided near the pay kiosk at the entrance to the campground. Hikers will meet at the main restroom building inside the campground.
No pets are allowed. Participants should dress in layers, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water and snacks. Don’t forget to bring hats and gloves as well as cameras and binoculars for wildlife viewing. Hikers can share photos on social media by using the hashtag #ORfirstdayhikes.
If there is no snow, a regular hike will be held. For more information call 541-786-0992. Those who have special accommodations can call Park Ranger Jessica Henize at 541-792-0101 at least three days in advance.
