Election Day has arrived

UMATILLA COUNTY – Tonight (Tuesday) at 8 p.m., county and state election officials throughout Oregon will begin to count the ballots in the May primary election. All ballots must either be postmarked or received by the deadline.
Signing the envelope containing the ballot is vital. Umatilla County Elections Director Steve Grain says officials work hard to make sure the signatures match what is on file. He agrees that it is possible that a person’s signature can change over the years enough to be questioned by the vote counters. If that’s the case, more than one person checks the signature. If a question remains, the county notifies the voter.
“We send them out a little form and they can return that,” he said. “If the signature did change and now it does match with what they returned we will count the ballot.”
Grain said that process needs to be completed within 21 days.
Election results will be posted on My Columbia Basin’s Facebook page as well as on the Elkhorn Media Group website.
