SALEM – In a recent press release, the Oregon State Lottery announced that no less than eight million dollars in unclaimed lottery winnings returned to the state at the end of the 2024 fiscal year, which ran from July 2023 to June 2024. For the 2025 fiscal year, $250,000 dollars in powerball winnings already sit unclaimed, with the deadline for these tickets rapidly approaching. According to the Oregon Lottery, any tickets unclaimed by the deadline will return to the State of Oregon and be distributed to Oregon Lottery beneficiaries. As further described in chapter 177, section 177-010-0085, of Oregon’s Administrative Rules:
“(1) A prize not validly claimed within the period specified for claiming a prize in any lottery game shall remain the property of the Commission and shall be allocated to the benefit of the public purpose. The Lottery shall transfer unclaimed prize money when it transfers proceeds allocated to the public purpose.
(2) The Commission delegates to the Director or the Director’s designee the authority to set a time period that is shorter than one year to claim prizes in any Lottery game.”
