Edmiston wants your cans

HERMISTON – Distance learning means Hermiston students can’t have their annual canned food drive that have beefed up Christmas Express baskets for years. Police Chief Jason Edmiston says it’s up to the community to step up.

“Hermiston historically has been a can-do community when it comes to fundraising,” he said. “We’re asking for a community-wide effort to supply us with enough canned foods.”

Edmiston said all donations are welcome, but asked people to stay away from food packed in glass containers.

“Glass becomes very problematic because of the way we store canned foods in large bins,” he said. “We don’t want anybody to get cut on a piece of glass because a can broke something.”

Donations are being accepted at a drop-off location at the front of the Hermiston Community Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except for Sunday between now and Dec. 11.
