WALLULA – The Washington State Department of Ecology has updated the estimated amount of red dye diesel spilled following the Nov. 6 Union Pacific train derailment near Wallula, along the Columbia River. Estimates of the spill have increased to 1,400 gallons. The earlier estimate was 660 gallons.
Ecology said cleanup contractors placed two layers of containment boom around the spill, trapping the diesel in place against the riverbank. At last report, no sheen outside the boom area had been observed.
Approximately six Union Pacific cars carrying frozen French fries derailed last Wednesday at 3:30 a.m. No one was hurt and the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
