Ecology monitoring cleanup of liquid ammonia fertilizer spill near Walla Walla

WALLA WALLA COUNTY – The Washington State Department of Ecology is following up on the site status and cleanup plan following Sunday’s liquid ammonia fertilizer spill near Walla Walla.
Ecology Communications Manager Stephanie May said the agency received a call on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. about a 10-wheeled farm truck hauling 3,000 gallons of liquid ammonia fertilizer.
The truck rolled near the intersection of Luckenbill Road and McFall Road, about 18 miles northwest of Walla Walla.
May said all the fertilizer spilled onto the roadway and the road right of way. She adds that all the liquid seeped into the soil with no free product.
A county hazmat crew cleaned up the roadway and is returning to clean up soil along the right of way.
Walla Walla County Undersheriff Joe Klundt said the agriculture tanker truck was being operated by a 15-year-old driver with only an agriculture permit.
